Job Overview

The Dispensary Support Learnerships at Dis-Chem Ferngate provide a structured programme for candidates to become registered learner basic pharmacist assistants. Through the Dispensary Support Learnerships, participants will gain practical experience in pharmacy operations, including dispensing, stock management, and patient service, while learning under the guidance of qualified pharmacists. Trainees in the Dispensary Support Learnerships will:

  • Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and scheduled substances under supervision
  • Support compounding, preparation, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines
  • Help with unpacking, merchandising, and maintaining dispensary and OTC shelves
  • Accurately interpret prescriptions and ensure legal compliance under SAPC standards
  • Manage stock control, including organization, expiry dates, and reporting low/out-of-stock items
  • Assist with chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication authorizations
  • Support call centre scripts and patient service calls
  • Provide accurate patient information to promote health

Minimum Requirements

Applicants for the Dispensary Support Learnerships should have:

  • Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate with Pure Mathematics 50%, Life or Physical Science, and an average of 50%
  • Proficiency test completed to apply for registration with the Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant
  • Good communication skills in English and a second language
  • Basic computer and numerical skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate picking, packing, labeling, and verification of medication
  • Assist in dispensary stock management and maintain cleanliness and organization
  • Follow SOPs for receiving and managing dispensary stock
  • Report stock errors and low/out-of-stock levels to the dispensary manager
  • Provide support to pharmacists and patients in accordance with legal and safety standards
  • Participate in all learning and training activities of the Dispensary Support Learnerships
